A recent study of the effectiveness of Nexium 40mg Capsules and the other two brands in reducing heartburn, magnesium or acidity among patients with GERD, found no significant differences in the risk of heartburn, which is the most common heartburn condition among adults.
The findings, led by the American College of Gastroenterology, indicate that patients taking a combination of acid- and proton pump inhibitor (PPI) at least once a week had a greater risk of developing heartburn in addition to other gastrointestinal symptoms.
Study author Dr. Emily Carter, a gastroenterologist at University of California, Los Angeles, stated in aJournal of the American College of Gastroenterologypublished by the American College of Gastroenterology that a combination of PPIs and other medications (such as antihistamines and antacids) is a safe and effective treatment for acid-reflux and heartburn.

"Studies of other medications to reduce acidity in the stomach, including PPIs, are still ongoing, and it is essential that we understand the potential mechanisms of action for these medications," Dr. Carter stated.
The American Gastroenterological Association has recommended that patients take the drugs PPIs (previously known as proton pump inhibitors) for acid reflux, which are also known as reflux disease.
"PPI-based medications are a safe and effective option for patients who are at risk for heartburn, and are also at high risk of developing heartburn associated with other conditions," she added.
Dr. Carter stated that "some physicians prescribe PPIs for acid reflux when other medications are ineffective or cause intolerable side effects."
She added that a patient's symptoms of acid-related gastrointestinal side effects, including stomach upset, acid reflux, heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux, diarrhea, ulcerative colitis, and peptic ulcers, may also be exacerbated by the medication.
Carter noted that the authors were cautious with the use of acid-related drugs as they were limited by the risk of causing stomach upset and other side effects.
"PPI medications are associated with gastrointestinal discomfort, heartburn, and nausea. However, the risk of these symptoms is relatively low," she explained.
The authors of the study stated that the risk of stomach upset may be greater for patients taking PPIs (such as esomeprazole) than for other medications used to treat acid reflux. "However, the risk of gastric ulcers is still considered low and not enough studies are available to demonstrate that these medications are associated with such an increased risk of ulcer or GI bleeding."
Carter stated that the study is important for physicians to be aware of the potential risk of side effects and to be informed about the available medications, including PPIs, to make sure patients receive the best care possible.
"Patients should always talk to their physicians about potential risks and benefits when taking a medication that they are taking, and make sure they understand the potential benefits and risks of taking the medication," she said.
The authors of the study state that the study is not a randomised, placebo-controlled trial.
